At least your camera held out for the trip and its got a lot of mileage on the clock, so served you well. Excellent set of photos, i think the one above is actually my favorite. At the opposite end of the weather scale the recent minus 15 temps have finished off my car :-(

The camera died in San Jose on the last day, but amazingly when I tried it today it is working again!!! Several times during the trip it stopped working probably due to the humidity. But I also dropped it several times and then smashed it pretty hard against the ground when I went to catch a snake.
Perhaps it will make my/our next trip after all...

Hi Matt,
Was this your first herping trip in the tropics? Needs a lot of patience and hard work finding snakes despite the vast array of species present, I'm sure you found it completely different to herping in the med region. An impressive species list and the photo's are really excellent - Bothrops, Bothriechis and especially the rare Lachesis (even if found by a local) superb for a first Costa Rican experience.

Yes it was my first trip to the tropics. I was pleased with the result, especially with amphibians, finding several rare and localised species.
I didn't find too many snakes, but to be honest I wasn't always searching like on my trips in Europe as some time had to be spent doing what other people wanted to do etc. I was very disappointed to not get photos of the adult Coral snake we stumbled across whilst out searching for glass frogs. It literally disappeared into the leaf litter..
Photographing the bushmaster was a great pleasure, as they are very rarely seen even in the most untouched primary rainforest.
I'll surely go back there!

with respect to the birds they are Black cheeked woodpecker either whip-poor-will or rufous nightjar and great blue heron i think - I am looking to go to Costa Rica so have the field guides etc.

Your pictures just make me want to go NOW !!! especially sat here in -2 degrees C 

The depicted bat is Rhynchonycteris naso - Proboscis bat. Nice trip with excellent pictures. 

Thanks for the nice comments. Costa Rica is truely an amazing place, although finding animals there was no easier than herping in the Mediterranean. In fact, I'd say it was even harder....
