Nice pics Tom. Love especially the last one with a snake and finnish red granite. I have a friend who have a place in Åland, and he used to say that there's lots of these snakes around. On the other hand allmost all books about finnish nature say (if they even bother to mention that this species live in Finland) that smooth snake is very rare. Maybe they just want to keep protect the snake from bad people. Does any one have any idea if the Smooth snake could spread to mainland Finland somehow, or why it's not to be found from there? G 

Yes Georg, that's a very interesting question. If the smooth snake has ever lived in mainland Finland?
There are reliable reports of Coronella austriaca not only from the main island of Åland, but also from some of the smaller islands between Åland and the mainland. There is a continuous archipelago between, so why not?
There is a study going on in about the genetic origin and colonization route of the Åland population of Coronella austriaca. Actually, what we where doing this summer in Åland, was collecting DNA-samples from live and D.O.R. -specimens for this study.
