Trapped
by GertJan Verspui - 30/4/2010 9h31Yesterday the 29th of april I looked around in my village in The Netherlands and found common newts(Lissotriton Vulgaris) and common toads (Bufo Bufo) trapped in a device for water management.
When it rains a lot the extra water will be guided to the river, but when it is dry for a while there is a concrete hole with water which is not in touch with other water sources so the quality of the water will be bad after a period of time.

On top of it lays a steel plate with holes, looking trough it I saw a lot of toads and newts which climbed on a small piece of floating wood, the newts were on top of the toads.
In the water were already 2 dead toads.

So I went home and grabbed some tools, small net, camera and went back.
To open the hole I had to remove 4 bolts and lift the steel plate, doing this some people asked me what I was doing and after explaining they smiled and thought I was crazy.

After getting them out I made a few photos, closed the hole and released 11 common toads and 9 common newts.
