:)Georg,of course I've heard the story but it's a 100% just a myth! To start with only mammals have the right mouth anatomy to sucle,there's no snake that can make a vacume with it's mouth...not to mention the thousands of other reasons for that being absolut fiction! 

Thats what I thought too. Never ever heard such an absurd history... very funny :) But what can you do when a person tells you that he him self have wittnessed this kind of thing? It's just funny how people react when you tell them that you are intrested in snakes. All those horror stories they start to tell. 

Well, I would not hesitate a second to propose them sending their story with all the details to a newspaper. I mean, this is something outstanding. ;) 

How about: "The terrible udder sucking snake terrorising milk industry in Bulgaria!" :)) Guess just that this kind of stories doesent do good for the reputation of snakes.

on the fields I heard many strange stories about snakes, but the most interesting story to me was that snakes smoking cigars. :))) "milk drinking snakes" (Z. longissimus) is the most common story for me.
You can hear everything in the Balkans :)

yes, these stories are also told here in Austria. Especially from the Grass Snake. Some farmers still put some dishes with milk in the barn, so the snakes will not drink from the cows and hurt them with their teeth. The truth is: Farmers found sometimes Grass Snakes in the barn. But they came into, to lay their eggs in some warm and humid corner.

This story is widespread in Southeastern region of Europe. Common used croatian name for Elaphe quatrolineata is Kravosas wich mean exact translated Cow sucker. Snakes has been common found in stables. Even, in some areas this was a good sign. My grandmother (shes born Hungarian around Balaton lake in Zala county) has told me that during blessing houses after christmas Priest often asked householders do they hear sometimes hissing in the stable, and if they do, that was a sign that house is blessed with a good spirit. 

Nice to hear there's myths in which snakes are associated with good luck!In most(at least Christian) they represent something evil!Crazy stuff! 

Same thing in Spain, but with Malpolon... And it's really difficult to disprove all this when the farmer saw the snake drinking ! Arrgh :(
