Hi all,
The records of Dolichophis caspius (Coluber jugularis caspius at the time of my Reptilian article) and Elaphe quatuorlineata on Santorini are both based on single sloughed skins found there by Richard Clark (Clark, R. 1969. A collection of snakes from Greece. Brit. J. Herpetol. 4:45-48). Clark states in a later paper on caspius/jugularis and quatuorlineata (Herptile, 1990) that he was certain of the identifications he made. Whether these few snake species and the 3 lizard spp. (C. kotschyi, H. turcicus, P. erhardii) recorded survived the historic catastrophic volcanic activity and tidal waves or resulted from later introduction is open to dispute. I spent 3 days on Santorini in May 1992 - P. erhardii abundant, H. turcicus common, C. kotschyi infrequent, and just 1 T. fallax pallidus. Spectacular beautiful harbour but too many tourists, motorbikes and scooters whizzing around everywhere. Daniel I would recommend holidaying on another island and visiting Santorini as a day trip!
