Dear Paulo and Mario,
S. s. alfredschmidti is a local, most likely non valid, variation of S. s. bernardezi with a well known distribution (far away from Portugal). Many bernardezi or "alfredschmidti" are almost completely yellow, hence the dissapearance of the dorsolateral yellow black stripes and grooves (so no value for subspecific designation!)Also, both "alfredschmidti" and bernardezi are characterised by small body size, short head, always lack red color ea.
The individual that you photographed, Paulo, is, judging from the size on the photo, slenderness, red color and the pointy snout (far to pointy for bernardezi) a variety of S. s. gallaica. It could be phenotypical variation, although there should be some areas in northeastern Portugal and northern Castilla y Leon were this pattern occurs quite often. |
