Neotenic M. alpestris cyreni
by Rubén Martínez - 13/10/2011 11h53Yesterday we went to the southside of the Cantabrian mountains, in the province of Palencia (Montaña Palentina). A lot of alpine lakes there (over 2.000 mt) have populations of M. alpestris cyreni, rather different from other lower populations (0 - 900 mt) with delicate morphology and blue/pearl colours (similar to apuanus). On the other hand, these strong and dark animals belong to the only population known with a high proportion of neotenic individuals. All the newts have a fully aquatic life-cycle...
