4 hours around my house - Salzburg, Austria
by Mario Schweiger - 30/6/2009 21h02Here some pics and a short report on about 4 hours in the woods, close to my house - exclusively for EFHC
After the heavy rains and much to low temperatures during the last weeks, since 2 days its getting warmer and also the sun cames out for a few hours.
What would be better to do as going out to look for some herps.
Due to the weather conditions - best for searching for amphibians.

also this Rana temporaria say Hi to you.......

.... and this Salamandra salamandra salamandra
So I went to the beech forests, only a few miles from my house.

Although everything was dropping wet and the whole forest steaming, when the sun came out, I found only 1 Firesalamander

... and have seen only 5 temporaria, jumping around in the wet meadows (2 I could get for pictures)

same individual, ventral view

and again.....
and 5 Bufo bufo, all under logs, was turning for Salamanders

this small creek at the edge of the beech forest is the brreding water for Salamandra salamandra.
and another Rana temporaria

This Bufo bufo made the "Unkenreflex". I never have seen this before, Bufo bufo is doing it!

and the last amphibian. an, about 3 cm large Bufo bufo. Juveniles here in Austria often show this brick red color.

And at last one of these bastards (Arion lusitanicus). They extend their territory from year to year about 15 to 20 kilometers here.

But anyway, nice to have a close look at it.
